Global Food Insecurity

David Beasley, executive director of the World Food Programme, also briefed the Security Council on Tuesday, describing the humanitarian situation in Ukraine as "a catastrophe upon catastrophe".

He warned that global food supplies would be affected and that food insecurity in the Sahel, North Africa and the Middle East could worsen. Because most of the supply of wheat and other staples in these regions comes from Ukraine and Russia, where corn is currently growing. June and July are the harvest season for the wheat crop.

Beasley stressed that a reduction in fertilizer-based products from Russia and Belarus will further exacerbate food insecurity, which could lead to a 50 percent drop in production in many countries.

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization issued a similar warning on Tuesday.

It is uncertain whether Ukraine will be able to harvest crops, plant new crops or maintain livestock production, FAO said after an assessment of Ukraine's 19 states.

"More than 40 percent of the surveyed areas are expected to experience food shortages immediately or in the next three months," said Rein Paulsen, director of FAO's Office of Emergencies and Resilience.

He noted that the conflict could severely disrupt the production of tens of thousands of smallholder farmers who have decided to stay.

To help support wider relief efforts, the FAO has appealed for $50 million, but only 10 percent has been funded.

Nevertheless, FAO will support more than 14,600 farmers, providing them with more than 740 tonnes of seeds for sowing.
